Tomorrow is my last day at NIH. In the past 10 years, I've moved three times and gone through two graduate schools. Those endings and moves were difficult, but no where near as hard as leaving this position will be. There are so many reasons for this, both professional and personal.
Professionally:
1. I have learned so much. My PI has been a wonderful mentor (in fact, we nominated him for NIMH mentor of the year, and he won!). He allowed me to focus on animal behavior, while providing me the opportunity to expand my knowledge in other areas as well (genetics, cell biology). My scientific knowledge has truly grown in the past 4 years.
2. I have become a better researcher. I think this is exemplified by one of the best compliments I have ever had. At my going away party last week, my boss said that he has always been impressed by the care that I take with my work, and unlike some other people in his lab, he has never once questioned any of my results, and he knows he can trust the data I produce. That really meant a lot to me.
3. I've had the opportunity to speak in front of large groups of people, enhancing my public speaking skills.
4. I have been primary author on 3 primary research articles from this lab (and 2 others from my graduate research), and primary author on 1 review. I have co-authored 2 other reviews, and 2 other primary research articles. Not bad for 4 years! And I will hopefully get one more paper out in a few months, after more data is collected by a coworker.
5. I have made so many professional connections. I fully believe that my research career is not over, and I will be doing research myself again one day.
I've known for 4 months that I would be leaving NIH in September and starting at Noldus, but that doesn't make this day any easier. I've been slowly packing up my stuff for the past couple of weeks, but as of today I am officially "homeless" in my lab. My coworker Barney took over my desk area (I did have the best one in the lab), my "replacement" Julia (a recent college graduate who will be working for a year to assist in carrying out experiments) took over my computer (which I wiped clean of all of my stuff), and the last of my items are packed into one last box. Tomorrow I am making sure Julia knows exactly what she needs to do to finish up my experiments, Barney is taking me out to lunch, and I'm just going to double check that everything is wrapped up.
Personally, these past 4 years have been huge as well. A house, two children, many new friends, reconnected with some old ones...amazing. And I'm about to be 30! On top of that, I'm moving on to my first "real" job. I guess I really am an adult. To prove that I am, I have to try and get through tomorrow without crying at work. It really will be a sad day for me.
