Ballet dress rehearsal

Ok, let's get these dance photos up here! As I mentioned two posts back, Natalie had her dance recital on June 2. They don't allow photography or videography at the actual recital (which I was actually rather happy about, as that prevented me from focusing on photography during and instead just enjoy the experience!), so for us parents the big day was, in some ways, the dress rehearsal, where we had the opportunity to capture our little ones dancing from close to the stage.

We've never been involved in a production before that involved a full dress rehearsal, but it was good for me to have experience putting Natalie's hair up into a bun.
I bought a bun helper at the drugstore, and that thing was a lifesaver. I'd never have been able to do such a perfect bun without it! Note: the piece of hair sticking out in the above photo was only because this was taken at the end of the rehearsal; I made sure that didn't happen on recital day!

We also had to put the girls in makeup, so they would stand out while on the stage. We were told after the dress rehearsal that all of the girls could use more makeup, so I made myself put more on her for the actual recital, but it was hard! She of course loved it and would have put on even more, I'm sure. As you can see, her friend Carson had a lot more on, which made her better to see from the crowd, so we amped it up for the recital!
While the girls waited for their turn to rehearse, Natalie and Carson had fun goofing around in the auditorium.

As the girls went up on stage, I picked a spot to take my pictures from, and I'm really happy with them! Looking at the photos from the professional photographer, who did have a better vantage point, I think I did ok in comparison! The only thing she was really better at capturing was their motion - my telephoto lens wasn't able to go fast enough to get it and still have the photos be bright enough. Look how much fun the girls were having.

And of course, I had to get some solo shots of my big girl. At the end of their first run-through of their dance, she was posing so nicely for me without even realizing it!

After the girls were done, they went to a hallway to have a posed photo taken of the entire group. We weren't allowed in that section, but I did get this shot of their intern (a high school student who helped their class all year), fixing one of the costumes.
And then I snuck this one of her all alone. I really want to try to contact her (through the ballet studio) to give this to her as an end of year gift - she looks beautiful!
At the end, we took Natalie and Carson outside for some posed shots - the girls looked beautiful and were such good posers!

These are terrific, Abbe! Next year I need lessons from you before Sydney's recital. I took a whole bunch at the dress rehearsal but they are nowhere near as nice as yours. Natalie looks adorable, too!
